Abstract

The present study investigated the influence of instructional media utilization on the teaching and learning of Economics in public secondary schools within Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The research was guided by five key research questions aimed at understanding the availability, usage, and challenges associated with instructional media in Economics classrooms. A descriptive survey design was employed to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the current instructional practices in the area. The study population comprised senior secondary school Economics teachers and students, from which a total sample of 110 participants comprising 100 students and 10 teachers was selected using stratified random sampling to ensure balanced representation across schools. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. The instrument underwent both face and content validation by a panel of three academic experts: two from the Faculty of Education and one from the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, thereby ensuring its reliability and relevance. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, specifically mean scores and standard deviations. The major findings of the study revealed that the effective utilization of instructional media significantly enhances the teaching and learning process in Economics. However, the study also discovered that there is a widespread underutilization of modern instructional tools such as projectors, smartboards, and internet-based resources which negatively affects students’ engagement and performance, particularly in external examinations like WAEC, NECO, and JAMB. This gap in instructional delivery contributes to students' poor academic outcomes due to a lack of exposure to technologically-driven, learner-centered approaches. Finally, the study concluded by highlighting the urgent need for further research into strategies for enhancing teachers’ competence in instructional media usage, assessing its long-term impact on student academic achievement, and exploring the comparative effectiveness of different types of media across subject areas and school environments.
