Abstract
This research investigated the Phytochemical Screening, Nutrient Evaluation and Anti-Microbial Activity of Onion (Allium cepa) Peel Extract. Dried red onion peels were pulverized and extracted using ethanol as the solvent. Standard procedures were employed for qualitative phytochemical screening to test for the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenols. The presence of Copper, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and iron was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The antimicrobial activity of the extract was assessed using the agar well diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Streptococcus spp. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the zones of inhibition were measured in millimeters. The results revealed that the microorganisms tested were resistant to the onion peel extract. However, phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins, and terpenes, all of which are known for their bioactive properties. Mineral analysis showed the following concentrations: Cu (0.278 mg/g), K (10.067 mg/g), Fe (0.354 mg/g), Na (11.038 mg/g), Mg (5.111 mg/g), and Zn (0.893 mg/g). These findings indicate high levels of potassium, sodium, and magnesium, along with moderate amounts of Copper, zinc, and iron.
