Abstract
Anthropogenic activity remains the single factor that remains of concern to the entire world with regards to the issue of water pollution, partly due to the threat of heavy metals present in it to the environment, the health of the animals and the human beings. In this study, the heavy metal toxicity load (HMTL) in surface water ecosystems and sediments was evaluated from six areas which includes Emene, Abapka ,Uguomu Nike 1 and 2, Trans – Ekulu within Enugu state Metropolis in Nigeria. The research took into account 6 water samples in terms of physicochemical parameters. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to analyze the samples for heavy metal toxicity load and Metal Index (MI) results were computed to ascertain the Level of heavy metal toxicity load. The pH of sediment was 6.7-7.0 and the pH of water was 6.6- 7.3. Alkaline sign 0. The conductivity turned out to be 36.8-120.0 micro S/cm and 36.8- 130.01 micro S/cm in water and sediment respectively but the total solids, turbidity, nitrate and sulfate parameters were found to be within the WHO guidelines. Cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) were at negligible concentrations. More-so, the levels of mercury (Hg), Copper (cu) and Nickel (Ni) in the water were higher than 0.001 and 0.002 mg/L. In order to make water drinkable, the concentration of heavy metals should be eliminated in 88 percent as suggested by WHO cut-off level of 0.01% mg/L. HTML and MI values. Deemonstrate severe threat to drinking water security and the aquatic environment and severe seriousness of cleanup.
