Abstract
Antibiotic susceptibility of the lung microbiome of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease patients is a research aimed at understanding the microbiome of COPD patients and determining the antibiotics best suited for treatment, To conduct this research sputum samples were obtained from patients at ESUT Teaching Hospital Park Lane, Enugu and inoculated into Nutrient, Blood and SDA agar plates, after which the observed microbial growth was subjected to various biochemical tests to identify the various species, Gram staining and microscopy in order to properly identify the microbes isolated, after identification the isolates were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing, Antibiotic sensitivity testing showed that majority of the isolated organisms were resistant to antibiotics which were previously deemed as treatment options, S. aureus for example which showed an intermediate response to ciproflaxin and resistance to all other antibiotics suggested it had become more resistant against the standard antibiotics used in laboratories, This research showed that antibiotics such as Ciproflaxin, Erythromycin, Penicillin e.t.c may no longer be effective in treating COPDs and emphasizes the need for an extensive research into antibiotics that would serve as proper treatment.
