Abstract

This work focuses on analyzing the topic on how Igbo diaspora contributes to economic and educational growth of Enugu State, Nigeria in 2019-2023. It is the work that is grounded on the concepts of transnationalism and institutional perspective and tries to explore the impacts of how the diaspora engagements in the form of remittance, investments, philanthropy and knowledge transmission have been influencing the local development exercises. The activities part of the study is specifically on diaspora activities supported by the Enugu state diaspora commission, a subnational organization that mobilizes the diaspora as a way of contribution to a sustainable development. The results indicate that diaspora giving has been of vast improvement to areas mainly in education, health, infrastructural construction and entrepreneurial ventures closing on the crucial developmental links left behind due to government neglects. Even as these are desirable findings, the research also indicates that some institutional pressures including inefficiency of bureaucracy, policy variability and failure to coordinate and integrate the diaspora-led initiatives into the formal official development agenda still exist. Applied with the secondary data analysis strategy of qualitative content analysis with reliance on the government reports, academic literature, and diaspora organizations, this research highlights the potential of Igbo diaspora as change agents of the region whose potential remains untapped. It proposes strategic policy reforms and strengthens the institution that would facilitate deeper, more lasting and long-term participation of the diaspora in Nigerian development.
