Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines intergroup relations between the Okirika and Kalabari peoples of Rivers state, Nigeria, from 1999 to 2009. It also examine the nature and dynamics of intergroup relations between Okirika and Kalabari communities during the post colonial period from 1999 to 2009. The study relied on both primary and secondary sources of data. This study finds the democratization and oil extraction after 1999 simultaneously deepened rivalry and created new channels for dialogue. The 2009 Amnesty Programme reduced large-scale violence but left structural grievances unresolved. Kinship ties, trade and traditional institutions remains key peacebuilding resources. the study concludes that lasting peace requires addressing economic inequalit, political marginalization and environmental degradation not just episodic conflict management.
