Abstract
The study sets out to examine the topic titled “From Militancy to Kidnapping in the Niger Delta: Implications for National Security, 2012 – 2022”. The objectives were to ascertain if the failure of Amnesty program has undermined national security in Nigeria; to examine the extent to which poverty in the Niger Delta aided insecurity in Nigeria. The frustration and aggression theory was adopted as a framework of analysis. Documentary method of data collection was used to collect data from secondary source of data. Data analysis was based on content analysis. The study was able to establish that the failure of amnesty program by the federal government of Nigeria undermined national security in Nigeria. The study identified factors such as lack of commitment by the federal government and corruption as factors that led to the failure of the amnesty program. The study also revealed that poverty in the Niger Delta region has aided insecurity in Nigeria. Environmental degradation and shortage of industries as a result of overreliance on oil have increased unemployment in the region further perpetuating poverty even beyond the Niger Delta region. The research hence recommends amongst others, the empowerment package should not just be increased but extended to cover a wide range of the population and not only the ex-militants. Jobs should be provided for the militants to divert their attention from oil, thus encouraging militancy and kidnapping. A trustworthy institution should be set up by the government to eradicate the corrupt exercises of authorities at all levels.
