Abstract
This study investigated the role of civil society organization (CSOs) in promoting democracy in Nigeria, with a specific emphasis on Yiaga Africa’s activities and experience between 2015 and 2025. Two research questions and hypothesis guided the study. The study was anchored on Liberal Democratic Theory by John Locke and John Stuart Milld during the 17 th and 18 th centuries. The study employed qualitative research design. The research primarily relies on secondary data sources. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The study highlighted the contribution of Yiaga Africa towards the promotion of democracy in Nigeria between 2015 and 2025. It also evaluated whether the activities of Yiaga Africa have significantly improved democracy in Nigeria between 2015 and 2025. The findings of the study revealed that Yiaga Africa played a crucial role in promoting Nigeria's democratic processes by supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and mobilizing citizen participation to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. The organization's efforts contributed to improved electoral credibility, although challenges such as occasional institutional resistance and electoral shortcomings persisted. The following recommendations were made: Strengthen Civic Engagement: Yiaga Africa and other CSOs should continue to promote civic education, voter registration, and participation in electoral processes to ensure citizens' voices are heard. Efficient Electoral Reform: CSOs should advocate for electoral reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, such as electronic voting and improved voter accreditation processes.
