Abstract

This study examined the influence emotional well-being and social adjustment among adolescents in the boarding school environment of Godfrey Okoye University Secondary School, Enugu State, Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from boarding students through standardized instruments, the Social Adjustment Scale (SAS) and the Emotional Well-being Scale (EWS). 200 Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Findings revealed that emotional well-being did not significantly predict students’ social adjustment, and no meaningful relationship was found between the two constructions. Furthermore, demographic variables such as age and gender did not significantly influence social adjustment. These results suggest that while students may maintain average levels of emotional and social functioning, emotional well-being alone may not determine how adolescents adjust socially within the boarding school context. The potential implication of the findings is that boarding schools should consider a more comprehensive view of adolescent development, and this involves the adequate quality of peer interactions, school environment, and support systems, rather than focusing on emotional health indicators. The school executive and policy makers should cultivate communally oriented, socially interactive and emotionally supportive boarding cultures. The proposal of the next steps that should be engaged in this research implies the use of longitudinal structures and mixed methods to reveal the intricacy of the relationship between social and emotional achievements in proximity education environments.
