Abstract
This research examined the Influence of TikTok Love and Relationship Contents on the Mental and Social Life of Youths in Enugu Metropolis. The study was guided by four objectives: to determine the extent to which youths in Enugu metropolis are exposed to love and relationship contents on TikTok, to ascertain how youths in Enugu metropolis perceive love and relationship contents shared on TikTok, to determine the extent to which exposure to love and relationship contents on TikTok lead to negative feelings like anxiety, loss of affection, low self-esteem, dissatisfaction, depression and strong desire for better relationship among youths in Enugu metropolis, to ascertain the extent to which exposure to love and relationship contents on TikTok leads to relationship instabilit, competition, disloyalty and isolation among youths in Enugu metropolis. Anchored on Social Comparison Theory and Technological Determinism, the study employed a survey research design. A sample size of 360 respondents was drawn from the population of TikTok-active undergraduates in Enugu metropolis. Data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed using mean scores and decision rules based on a modified 4-point Likert scale. Findings revealed that most youths in Enugu metropolis are highly exposed to love and relationship contents on TikTok and perceive it as a reflection of real-life relationships. This exposure sometimes led to unrealistic expectations, emotional dissatisfaction, and comparison- driven behaviors. The study concluded that while TikTok plays an engaging and creative role in youth culture, it also silently contributes to mental pressure and altered social dynamics. It recommends healthy digital literacy programs, promotion of realistic content creating, mental health support, and parental and peer involvement to help youths critically engage with online contents and protect their well-being.
