Abstract
This study examined the impact of infrastructure development on poverty reduction in Nigeria, focusing on transportation, energy, and telecommunications sectors using data from 1999 to 20221. Employing a multiple regression model, the research analyzed the effects of investments in these infrastructure categories on poverty headcount rates, supported by rigorous econometric tests including unit root, cointegration, and error correction modeling. The unit root tests revealed non-stationarity in the variables, but cointegration analysis confirmed the existence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among infrastructure investments and poverty reduction. The short-run error correction model results indicated that increased investment in energy infrastructure significantly reduced poverty, while telecommunications infrastructure, unexpectedly, showed a positive but statistically significant association with poverty, due to access and affordability challenges. Transport infrastructure exhibited a weak and statistically insignificant effect on poverty reduction in the short run. The findings underscore the necessity for targeted and sustained investments in energy and rural infrastructure, improved governance, and inclusive digital policies to maximize infrastructure’s poverty-reducing potential in Nigeria.
