Abstract

This study examined China's Belt and Road Initiatives and their impact on African development and sovereignty,focusingonNigeriafrom2015to2025.It assessed how BRI projects contributed to infrastructural development and how BRI financing affected Nigeria's economic sovereignty. The study adopted a qualitative ex post facto research design and relied on secondary data from Debt Management Office reports, CARI data, World Bank debt statistics, Nigerian Railway Corporation records, UNGA voting records and peer-reviewed studies. Data were analysed through qualitative content analysis, while Dependency Theory served as the analytical framework. Findings showed that BRI supported major rail, port and energy projects, with Chinese-linked infrastructure finance exceeding USD 4.8billion. However, BRI engagement also increased Nigeria's exposure to Chinese loan stock, high debt-service pressure, confidentiality clauses, sovereign immunity waiver concerns and closer UNGA voting alignment with China. The study concluded that Nigeria's BRI experience produced measurable infrastructure gains but also raised sovereignty and dependency concerns. It recommended stronger National Assembly oversight, transparent loan disclosure and clear sovereignty safeguards in future China-linked infrastructure financing agreements.
