Abstract

This study examined the influence of radio in redefining dangerous cultural practices against women in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The study was guided by four research objectives which focused on the extent of exposure to radio programmes on women-related issues, the influence of radio on awareness of harmful cultural practices, the role of radio discourse in reshaping perceptions, and the extent to which radio messages promote behavioural change. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 190 respondents comprising female staff of St. Paul’s University College and radio practitioners from ABS Radio and Gospel FM. A total of 180 valid responses were used for analysis. Data were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that people in Awka South are highly exposed to radio programmes addressing women-related issues. The study further showed that radio programmes significantly enhance awareness of harmful cultural practices affecting women by providing information on women’s rights and exposing listeners to new perspectives. It was also found that radio discourse plays a major role in redefining public perceptions by challenging harmful traditional beliefs and encouraging critical reflection on cultural practices. Furthermore, radio messages were found to significantly influence behavioural change, encouraging community members to reject harmful cultural practices against women. The study was anchored on Agenda-Setting Theory, which explains how media influence issue salience and public perception. Empirical findings were supported by previous studies which confirmed that radio remains a powerful tool for awareness creation and social change. The study concluded that radio is an effective medium for cultural reorientation and recommended increased production of women-focused programmes, collaboration with advocacy groups, and the use of indigenous languages to enhance impact.
