Abstract

The design of court buildings must take into account acoustic considerations to ensure clear speech, adequate privacy, and the efficient administration of justice. This study investigates the influence of architectural acoustics on High Court buildings, with particular emphasis on speech intelligibility, noise control, and spatial planning. Through a review of relevant literature, case studies, and site appraisal, several common acoustic challenges were identified, including excessive reverberation, external noise intrusion, sound leakage, and inadequate acoustic zoning.The findings informed the design of a proposed State High Court Complex at Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu. Acoustic design solutions were incorporated through appropriate site planning, functional zoning, sound-insulating building elements, sound-absorbing finishes, and landscape buffers aimed at minimizing noise and enhancing the acoustic quality of the judicial environment.The design proposal demonstrates how architectural design can improve courtroom functionality, enhance user comfort, ensure confidentiality, and facilitate clear communication during judicial proceedings. The study concludes that acoustic control should be recognized as an integral component of courthouse design and incorporated from the early stages of the architectural design process
