Abstract
This study explores the application of bioclimatic architectural principles in the design of a coeducational day secondary school for 900 students in Ugwuomu Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. The research addresses the critical gap in climateresponsive educational infrastructure in Nigeria, where conventional school designs produce thermally uncomfortable environments, excessive dependence on mechanical cooling, and diminished student performance. Drawing from a comprehensive literature review, six case studies (three foreign and three local), and detailed site analysis, the study develops an evidence-based design proposal integrating passive design strategies with the specific climatic conditions of the study area. The methodology combines qualitative descriptive research with direct observation of existing school buildings and physical survey of the proposed site at Godfrey Okoye University Farm. Climate data analysis reveals a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) with temperatures from 25°C to 35°C, high humidity (40–85%), and significant solar radiation, demanding strategies centred on natural ventilation, solar shading, and thermal comfort. The design concept. "The Open Book" translates educational symbolism into a functional Y-shaped campus that channels prevailing south-westerly winds through classroom blocks oriented east-west to minimise solar heat gain. Key bioclimatic strategies include: raised roof ventilation gaps inspired by Gando Primary School; cross-ventilation through louvred windows on opposite walls; horizontal and vertical shading devices calculated for latitude 6.47°N; 3.5-metre ceiling heights for hot air stratification; and strategic landscape planting with indigenous tree species. The study demonstrates that passive design can eliminate the need for mechanical air conditioning while creating comfortable, energy-efficient, and symbolically meaningful educational spaces. It contributes to Nigerian architectural knowledge by providing a replicable, site-specific model for climate-responsive school design and recommends policy integration of bioclimatic criteria into public school construction standards.
