Abstract
The study examined the implication of social media language on students’ essay writing in senior secondary schools in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu state. Four questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The area of the study was Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The sample of the study was 100 SS 2 students as drawn from a population of 1,420 through stratified random sampling technique. Questionnaire was adopted as the instrument for data collection while mean and standard deviation were used as the method of data analysis. Major findings revealed that social media language has an adverse impact on students’ writing. One common feature of social media language is the ability to limit characters in words, saving space and time. Social media language features deviate from the rules and norms of Standard English and affects the mechanical, expression, organization and content components of students’ essays. Students are affected most in mechanics because most of the features fall under the mechanical errors. Considering the study's findings, it is clear that students do poorly while writing essays because of their use of social media terminology. Based on these findings, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made therein.
