Abstract

This research aimed to determine the phytochemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and to demonstrate the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous Mangifera indica leaf extract. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, and phytosterols. Successful synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by the colour change from pale yellow to dark brown, a UV–Vis absorption peak at 438 nm, and FTIR peaks at 3421.35 cm⁻ ¹ (O–H stretching), 1602.41 cm⁻ ¹ (C=C stretching), and 1384.53 cm⁻ ¹ (O–H bending), indicating the involvement of phytochemicals in the reduction and stabilization of the nanoparticles. SEM analysis revealed predominantly spherical, well-dispersed nanoparticles with an average particle size of approximately 45–60 nm. EDX analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of AgNPs, with silver (68.4%) as the major element, alongside oxygen (18.7%), carbon (10.9%), and chlorine (2.0%), demonstrating the elemental composition of the nanoparticles. DPPH and FRAP assays showed moderate antioxidant activity, with AgNPs exhibiting slightly higher activity than the crude leaf extract. No antibacterial activity (zone of inhibition = 0 mm) against Aspergillus niger, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus was observed at a concentration of 9 mg/mL. Mangifera indica leaf extract is an effective and ecofriendly reducing and capping agent for the green synthesis of AgNPs with considerable antioxidant potential.
