Abstract
This study examines the socio-cultural organizations of Nyanya-Ichogodo community in Bekwarra Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria between the years 1999 to 2006. This research was done in order to trace the history and socio-cultural institutions of the community especially in the wake of modernization, Christianity, and other factors which have resulted in the decline of various indigenous institutions. Historical research approach was used in the analysis, combining both thematic and chronological approaches. Sources of data include primary sources such as oral interviews and observations, as well as secondary sources like books, journals, unpublished works and internet. The results indicate that the family, kinship institution, age grades, leadership, marriage, religion and cultural festivals among others helped in keeping the society in order, fostering unity and cultural identity, as well as development of the community. In addition, the study established that despite the fact that modernization and Christianity led to changes in some aspects of the culture, these institutions have managed to survive due to their ability to adapt to new circumstances while maintaining their value base intact. Consequently, the study recommends that these indigenous institutions of Nyanya–Ichogodo be documented, preserved, and propagated to preserve the cultural heritage of the community
