Abstract

This study examined Sustainable Development Goal One (SDG 1) and poverty reduction in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the role of the Enugu State Government. Despite several government policies and interventions and global development efforts focused on the welfare of its citizens, poverty continues to be one of the biggest socio-economic problems facing Nigeria. The study examined the poverty reduction programmes of the Enugu State Government according to SDG 1, the impact of the programmes on poverty reduction and the perception of the people about the effectiveness of the implementation. Three objectives, research questions, and hypotheses guided the research of the study. The study used a descriptive survey research design and questionnaires and oral interviews were used to collect the data from the respondents. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 232 respondents which included programme beneficiaries and programme officers. The collected field data was presented and analyzed by descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentage, mean score) and hypotheses formulated were tested using Pearson's correlation coefficient to arrive at the relationship between poverty reduction programmes and poverty reduction outcome in Enugu State. The results of the study indicated the policies of the Enugu State Government under Sustainable Development Goal One (SDG1) are some of the poverty reduction policies, which the government has put in place, these are skills acquisition schemes, empowerment schemes, agricultural support schemes, micro credit, and social welfare schemes. The results also indicated that these programmes had significant positive impacts on poverty reduction, in terms of improved household incomes, employment opportunities, food security and access to basic social services. The study also found that residents' perceptions of the success of government poverty reduction policies are “moderate” in the face of low funding levels, weak implementation mechanisms, corruption and poor monitoring and evaluation systems. The study found that although the Enugu State Government has taken actions to achieve SDG1, there is need for increased commitment, transparency and effective policy implementation for sustainable poverty alleviation. The study proposed adequate funding of poverty reduction programmes, streamline monitoring and evaluation system, involvement of the communities and transparency and accountability in the implementation of the programme to improve the results of poverty reduction in Enugu State.
