Abstract

Fungal infections of the toe webs are common among school children and may result in discomfort, itching, inflammation, and other superficial infections if not properly managed. This study is aimed to evaluate the Fungal microbiota present in toe webs of Godfrey Okoye Primary School pupils, Enugu State. A total of twenty (20) toe web samples were collected from pupils aged 7–12 years using sterile swab sticks under aseptic conditions. The samples were cultured on Potatoe Dextrose Agar and incubated at room temperature. Identification of fungal isolates was based on colony morphology and microscopic examination using Lactophenol Cotton Blue stain. Data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The fungal species identified were Aspergillus niger 3(20.0%), Aspergillus clavatus 2(13.3%), Candida albicans 2(13.3%), Cunninghamella bertholletae 2(13.3%), Penicillium verrucosum 3(20.0% ), Talaromyces marneffei 2(13.3% ) and Trichophyton rubrum1(6.8% ). Aspergillus niger and Penicillium verrucosum had the highest frequency of occurrence, while Trichophyton rubrum had the lowest occurrence. The presence of these fungal organisms suggests that the toe web region provides a favourable environment for fungal colonization due to moisture, sweating, and poor foot hygiene practices. The study concludes that primary school pupils may harbour various fungal organisms in their toe web spaces and emphasizes the importance of proper personal hygiene, foot care, and health education in preventing fungal infections among school children
