Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the contribution of the United Nations in managing religious extremism in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict between 2021 and 2025. The study specifically examined the impact of the failure of the United Nations to shape the warring parties' behavior on the management of religious extremism and why the United Nations has failed to develop effective unilateral political strategies to help defuse the escalating conflict. The study was based on the Liberal Institutionalist Theory of Keohane and Nye 1977. Ex post facto research design was used. Data were collected through documentary sources. Qualitative content analysis was used for the analysis of the collected data. The study indicated that the United Nations was involved in the Israel–Hamas conflict in terms of mediation, humanitarian aid, ceasefire agreements, and advocacy for civilian protection. It also found a lack of the United Nations' ability to make a decisive impact on the warring parties added to the violence escalating and the religious extremism that was part of the conflict environment. The study thus called for the enhancement of multilateral cooperation, a reform of the processes of decision-making in the Security Council, and more investment in preventive diplomacy and peace building efforts that tackle the root causes of extremism and violent conflict.
