Abstract

This study examined different styles of leadership and how they impacted the productivity of workers in small and medium sized enterprises (SME) in Enugu State (the south-east region) of Nigeria. The specific focus of this project was to find out how a variety of different types of leaders: transformational, transactional, democratic, laissez-faire and autocratic influence the productivity of employees. A survey research design was used, with a population size of 250 employees and management staff from selected SMEs located in the Enugu East Local Government Area. Therefore, the Taro Yamane formula was used to calculate that a sample of 154 respondents would be required for the research. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire, of which 128 valid copies were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and multiple regression analysis through the SPSS computer software, version 25. As a result, the findings from this study showed that: transformational leaders significantly positively influenced the productivity of employees with a direct effect of (β = .402, p < .001); transactional leadership also had a positive impact on the productivity of employees with a direct effect of (β = .228, p < .003); Democratic leadership significantly influenced the productivity of employees with a direct effect of (β = .351, p < .001); however, Laissez-faire leadership significantly negatively impaired employee productivity with a direct effect of (β = −.184, p < .007); Autocratic leadership, like laissez-faire leadership, negatively influenced employee productivity with a direct effect of (β = −.151, p < .016). The conclusion of this study was that effective leadership styles will significantly increase employee productivity within the SME sector of Nigeria. Therefore, it is suggested that SME managers should adopt the use of more transformational and democratic styles of leadership in order to achieve an increase in employee productivity
