Abstract

This research studied African Union conflict resolution mechanisms in the Ethiopia-Tigray conflict from 2021 to 2024. The research was led by three aims. to check how the African Union institutional systems and peace structure influenced the mediation path. to. study the usefulness of the African Union involvement in reaching the end of fighting, helping the peace agreement. and to study how the. problems and limits encountered by the African Union influenced its conflict resolution work. The research used a qualitative documentary and ex post facto research design. Data were collected from other sources, including African Union communiqués, the Pretoria Agreement, United Nations records, humanitarian agency publications, journal articles, books, and trusted media records. The data were studied through thematic documentary content analysis, while Liberal Institutionalism served as the main idea based system. The research found that the of African Union Peace and Security Architecture gave the institutional basis for mediation through the Peace and Security Council, . the Office of the High Representative for the Horn of Africa, AU High-Level Panel,, the Monitoring, Verification and Compliance Mechanism.,, the usefulness of these structures was limited by weak enforcement strength, money dependence, slowed early warning response, and political sensitivity arising from the position of Ethiopia as host of AU headquarters. The research also found that AU involvement added with importance to the signing of the Pretoria Agreement of 2 November 2022 and helped to. lower large-scale fighting, reopened humanitarian access, and back limited political normalisation in Tigray., In spite of this, action remained incomplete due to unresolved land disagreements, the kept worry over Eritrean forces, weak checking strength, limited transitional justice progress, and kept movement from homes. The research determined that the African Union played an important but constrained part in the Ethiopia-Tigray conflict. It advised stronger AU funding, made better early warning systems, clearer enforcement systems, inclusive mediation paths, and sustained post-agreement checking for future conflict resolution work. Keywords: African Union, conflict resolution, Ethiopia-Tigray conflict, Pretoria Agreement, mediation, Peace and Security Architecture
