Abstract

This study looked at international security and global terrorism in the present century through a close study of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria between 2020 as well as 2025. The study checked how the insurgency shaped international security relations of Nigeria and cooperation, the success of counterterrorism strategies of Nigeria, as well as the effect of the insurgency on regional security cooperation in the Lake Chad Basin. The study used documentary and ex post facto Research designs as well as used secondary data from ACLED, IOM, UN OCHA, MNJTF records, official security documents, along with peer-reviewed academic sources. Data were studied through documentary content analysis and thematic analysis shaped by Realism Theory as well as Securitisation Theory. The results show that Boko Haram and ISWAP kept operational capacity, deepened humanitarian insecurity, as well as raised Nigeria to international security along with legal review. The study also found that counterterrorism strategies of Nigeria created tactical gains but did not defeat in a full way the insurgency, while the crisis both made it stronger and put pressure on MNJTF-led regional cooperation. The study ends with the view that the insurgency was controlled more than defeated and advises stronger diplomatic coordination, firm MNJTF resource promises, as well as improved joining of security along with humanitarian responses.
