Abstract

Because Boko Haram activities in the Sahel region have affected military security capacity, social welfare and regional response, Global terrorism as well as regional insecurity remain major security issues in West Africa.The main objective of this study was to examine global terrorism and regional insecurity in West Africa with a study of the activities of Boko Haram in the Sahel region from 2015 to 2025. The specific objectives were to analyse how the activities affected military security capacity,assess the socio economic effects and examine the military response of West African states. Data were drawn from academic articles, books, government records, United Nations notes, African Union publications, Lake Chad Basin Commission records, MNJTF sources and official documents. This research covered Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad from 2015 to 2025. It adopted ex post facto and documentary research designs. Content analysis, thematic analysis, comparative analysis and triangulation were used. The first finding showed that Boko Haram activities strained military security capacity through troop pressure, border insecurity, intelligence burden and joint operations. The second finding showed that the activities produced socio economic effects through displacement, food insecurity, trade disruption, school closure, health pressure and livelihood loss. Because factional survival, political tension and weak stabilisation continued, The third finding showed that West African states responded through national operations as well as the MNJTF but the response remained in part effective. Because insecurity in one state affected neighbouring states,The study concluded that Regional Security Complex Theory states the crisis. It recommended stronger MNJTF intelligence sharing, stronger military security capacity and recovery programmes for affected communities.
