Abstract

This study examined Political Defection and the Emerging Riskof a One-Party Dominance in Nigeria: Implications for Multi-Party Democracy (2023–2026). The study sought to examine the factors driving political defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria between 2023 and 2026, assess the impact of mass political defections on the emergence of one-party dominance in Nigeria, and evaluate the implications of mass political defections for multi-party democracy in Nigeria. Three research questions and hypotheses guided the study.The study adopted a qualitative research design and employed thematic the method of data analysis. Data were obtained from secondary sources, including official government publications, National Assembly reports, newspaper reports, policy documents, and publications from reputable domestic and international organisations. The study was anchored on Institutional Theory.Findings revealed that mass political defections to the APC were driven by weak ideological commitment, political survival instincts, internal party crises, patronage politics, and legal loopholes in Nigeria’s constitutional framework. The tha these defections significantly weakened opposition parties,concentrated political power within the APC, and undermined electoral competitiveness, thereby accelerating the risk of one-party dominance. The study concluded that Nigeria’s multi-party democracy is under serious threat as frequent defections erode democratic accountability, fuel voter apathy, and encourage authoritarian tendencies. The study recommended that government should strengthen legal frameworks regulating political defections, promote internal party democracy, and reduce the monitisation of politics to safeguard Nigeria’s multi- system.
