Abstract

This study investigated how work environment influence the performance of employees in filling stations (oil/gas) within the metropolitan region of Enugu. Specifically, this study looks at whether physical, social, and task environmental factors impact employee performance levels at filling stations. This study used both in-depth surveys and statistical analysis on data collected through the administration of surveys to employees who worked at selected filling stations within the Enugu East Local Government Area (the population of interest to this study contains 119 subjects). A census enumeration of the population approach was adopted. Data were collected through structured questionnaire designed. About 119 copies of questionnaire were administered, out of which 108 valid copies were used for analysis. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were utilized using SPSS version 26. The study results disclosed that physical environmental factors had a significant positive effect on employee performance (β = .341, t = 4.417, p < .05). Social environmental factors also significantly influenced employee performance (β = .309, t = 4.145, p < .05), while task environmental factors emerged as the strongest predictor of employee performance (β = .372, t = 4.720, p < .05). The model summary showed a strong relationship between the variables (R = .842, R² = .709), while the ANOVA result indicated that the model was statistically significant, F (3,104) = 83.124, p < .05. The study therefore, concluded that conducive work environments significantly enhance employee performance. The study recommended improved workplace conditions, supportive management practices, and effective task structures to enhance productivity in the oil and gas sector. The contribution to knowledge is that the study is the first to examine the constructs in the oil and gas fillings stations in Enugu East LGA.
