Abstract

This study examined the role of Amnesty International in the promotion of human rights in Nigeria between 2015 and 2023. The study was motivated by the persistent cases of police brutality, unlawful detention, torture, suppression of peaceful protests, and other human rights violations despite Nigeria's democratic governance and constitutional guarantees of fundamental rights. The study adopted Liberal Theory as its theoretical framework and employed a qualitative exploratory research design. Data were collected from secondary sources, including Amnesty International reports, United Nations publications, government documents, scholarly journals, textbooks, newspapers, and policy papers. Qualitative descriptive analysis and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data.The findings revealed that Amnesty International significantly contributed to exposing human rights violations, promoting public awareness, advocating democratic accountability, and influencing discussions on institutional reforms in Nigeria. The study further found that the organization's advocacy during the #EndSARS protests attracted both national and international attention to police brutality and strengthened demands for accountability. However, its effectiveness was constrained by government resistance, weak institutional enforcement, insecurity, and political interference. The study concluded that Amnesty International has played a significant role in promoting human rights in Nigeria despite existing challenges. It recommended stronger collaboration between government institutions and human rights organizations, improved security sector reforms, and effective implementation of human rights protection mechanisms to strengthen democratic governance and accountability.
