Abstract

This study examines the influence of family background on students’ academic performance in government in public secondary schools in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study is guided by four research question. The study is based on Abraham Maslow Motivational Theory of (1970). The study adopts descriptive survey research design. The population for this study was 2,785 students. The sample size for this study was 200 students derived through a simple random sampling technique. The data was collected by structured questionnaire and the name given to questionnaire is (Influence of Family Background Questionnaire(IFBQ)). The instrument was Face Validated by 3 experts in which two are from Social science Education and one are from Measurements and evaluation, Faculty of Education, Godfrey Okoye University Enugu State. A reliability coefficient value of 0.93 was recorded using Cronbach Alpha method for reliability. In terms of analysis, the data collected were analyze with mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that students from low socio-economic background, broken homes, large family size and poor educational background are usually subjected to compromise educational upbringings. Consequence to this effect, the study shows that parents has influence on students academic performance. The following recommendations were made: Parents need to boast their socioeconomic status in order to meet up with their children needs in school. Parents should be made to appreciate the importance of unity as broken homes distract students from concentrating on their academic pursuit. Parents should make effort to control the size and type of their families to a manageable level. Government should look into educational background of parents by increasing their pay level which will help them meet up with their children needs
