Abstract

Port Harcourt and Onne seaports are crucial to the South-Eastern economy of Nigeria. Nevertheless, there is limited, inconsistent, and largely crisis-reporting media coverage on port activities. The availability of adequate and timely coverage of the port activities and regulatory developments would ensure effective decision making and actions by traders, who are key beneficiaries. This study explored the perception of media coverage of port activities and developments by traders in Onitsha Main Market and Ogbete Main Market with a focus on their level of awareness and expectation of this coverage and their judgment of its quality. Employing the Agenda-Setting Theory and the Uses and Gratifications Theory, a survey was conducted and administered on a sample of 384 traders drawn from a population of 79,500 in the respective markets, using the Krejcie and Morgan table. A total of 367 responses were valid and analyzed. The results of the study indicated a low level of awareness of media coverage of the seaports (Mean=2.0) and the expectations of traders of this media coverage have not been adequately met (Mean=2.0). The media coverage was also found to be infrequent, and not too detailed to guide their decision making in their day to day activities. The perception of the quality of media coverage received by the traders however yielded an average score of 2.6 as the traders indicated that it is moderately useful to them in some areas but still lacking in other aspects and in most instances, unreliable. It is therefore recommended that more rigorous, regular, objective, and specific news reportage of the seaports should be undertaken by the media organisations
