Abstract
Abstract This study was aimed at investigating the impacts of social media diplomacy and advocacy for Nigerian political and cultural profile of Buhari regime (2015-2023). Specifically, the study investigates the extend to which X projected Nigeria political image globally and enhanced Nigeria cultural image to international publics in the period under review. The study is predicated on the Soft Power Theory conceptualized by Nye (2004). The study adopted ex post facto research design in view of the fact that the events and variables of study have already taken place and not possible to be manipulate by researchers. Data for the study were gathered through documentary sources. Qualitative content analysis technique was employed in the analysis of the data gathered for study. Findings revealed that Buhari administration, among other government of Nigeria administration gradually increased its utilization of X as strategic tool for political communication, diplomatic outreach, and foreign policy engagement. The study further revealed that the political visibility of Nigeria and its engagement with other countries via diplomatic communication on X, improve considerably. In the same vein, Nigerian cultural materials like Afrobeats music, Nollywood, fashion industry, and digital cultural contents also improved the country cultural image at the global arena via visibility and engagement with foreign public. However, issues of insecurity in Nigeria, allegation of corruption and human rights, #EndSARS protest and suspension of X in 2021 by the government had militated against the image projection of the country in the realm of its social media diplomacy. Recommendations made by the study includes among other that Nigerian government should brace up for efficient strategic social media diplomacy, policy stability, and enhancement of positive brand imaging of culture in order to maintain credibility. Keywords: Social media diplomacy, X (Twitter), political image, cultural image, Buhari administration.
