Abstract
This study addresses unconstitutional military takeover in West Africa despitetheECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, 2001. The aimis toevaluateECOWAS legal and security frameworks in preventing coups, using Burkina Faso2020-2025 as the case study. Grounded in Democratic Consolidation Theory andRegional Security Complex Theory, the study examines the interaction betweenregional institutions and domestic politics. Using qualitative case study methodology, itanalyzes ECOWAS protocols, AU frameworks, coup timelines, sanctions andliteratureon Burkina Faso 2022 coups, 2029 transition plan, and 2024 ECOWAS withdrawal. Findings shows ECOWAS enforcement is limited by dependence on member statewill, erosion of democratic legitimacy from insecurity and poor governanceandweakened regional solidarity when multiple states reject ECOWAS. Thestudyrecommends ECOWAS should apply sanctions and diplomatic measures consistentlyto all member states to restore credibility and deter coups and also reformsitsdecision making to be more transparent, neutral, and principle based reducingtheinfluence of powerful states and political interest.
