Abstract

In today's world, there is an increasing need for organisations and educational institutions to share information and collaborate effectively. However, the traditional methods of sharing files and communicating demonstrate several limitations, such as security risks, file duplication, limited access control, reliance on the Internet, and inefficient methods of collaboration. Therefore, this study has been undertaken with the aim of designing and developing a new method for sharing files securely over a local area network (LAN) using a File Sharing and Communication System (FSCS). To implement the aim and objectives of this study, the Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) Methodology and Unified Modelling Language (UML) diagrams were used in order to provide model architecture and functionality for the CSFS. The CSFS was developed using software technologies such as Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap in a client/server environment. The primary features of the FSCS include: user authentication, role-based access control, user upload and download files, real-time messaging, activity logging, and management by administrators. To evaluate the performance of the FSCS, thirteen test cases were run on all functional modules of the FSCS, with all thirteen test cases having positive results. The results support the development of an FSCS that is an Internet-independent, cost-effective and secure method for sharing files and using other communication methods can lead to better collaboration and use of resources, as well as the enhancement of communication capabilities.
