Abstract
This study sought to determine the influence of selected InstagramandTikTokaccounts on the fashion choices of female undergraduate students of Godfrey OkoyeUniversity, Enugu State, Nigeria. The study focused specifically on the level of exposureof female undergraduate students to the Instagram account of Prudent Gabriel andtheTikTok account of Veekee James; how the exposure to these social media accountsaffects their fashion sense; what fashion styles they adopt; and the impact of theseselected Instagram and TikTok accounts on their body image perception. Thesurveyresearch design was employed in the study. The study population consistedof 415female undergraduate students of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu State. Usingthemultistage sampling method, four departments from two faculties were chosen, yieldingan accessible population of 415 female undergraduate students. The structuredquestionnaire was used to collect data. The validity of the questionnairewasdetermined using face and content validity by the project supervisor. Fromthefindingsreaveled that most female students are are highly expoused to fashion-relatedcontentfrom the chosen Instagram and TikTok influencers with the overall mean scoreof 2.9. Ithas also been established that such exposure determines their fashion preferencesandchoices. The findings further reveal that the chosen Instagram and TikTok profileshavean influence on the fashion styles of female undergraduate students. In addition, theoverall mean score of 2.9, which is above the criterion mean of 2.5, indicates that eventhough fashion content has an impact on the body image and beauty standardsof therespondents, most of the respondents have never compared themselves withtheinfluencers. In conclusion, this research proves that Instagram and TikTok havebecomevery influential social media platforms which have shaped the fashion style andtosomedegree, the body images of female undergraduate students. This study recommendsthat universities adopt media literacy programmes that would promote critical useoffashion-related content on social media.
