Abstract
This Study Examines Prevalence of Anxiety Disorders Among Undergraduate Students of Godfrey Okoye University and Their coping mechanisms. 200 students from International Relations, Microbiology, Computer Science Departments participated in this study. Two questionnaires that contain item to access for generalization anxiety disorder scale (Gad-7) and coping strategy indicator-short form (CSI-SF) were administered to them. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and pearson product-moment correlation in SPPS version 27.0. The result found that majority of the students surveyed expressed their experience of different degrees of anxiety, ranged from mild to severe; some may experience levels of symptoms that may meet criteria for clinical significance. Also, female students expressed a greater degree of anxiety than male students, and of the three departments surveyed computer science recorded highest average score of anxiety in terms of severity. While coping with anxiety most students employed engagement strategy such as problem-solving, help-seeking and re-framing as their dominant response to dealing with anxiety. The study also found that students employing active-coping strategies experienced less anxiety levels; on the flipside; avoidance and Withdraw strategies resulted in high anxiety levels. The conclusion is that anxiety disorder prevalent in under graduate level, students approach to coping with anxiety significantly impact on his/her anxiety levels. The university authority ought to strengthen counseling support, embark on regular public awareness on the mental health education and promotion as well as encourage the use of efficient coping skill of the students that will favor students for success in life and academics.
