Abstract

This study examined the perception and coping mechanisms of cyberbullying among undergraduate students of Godfrey Okoye University. The study was guided by five research objectives which focused on the level of awareness of cyberbullying, forms of cyberbullying experienced, students' perception of cyberbullying, effects of cyberbullying on students, and coping mechanisms adopted by students. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 341 undergraduate students selected through purposive sampling technique. A total of 288 valid responses were used for analysis. Data were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, mean scores, and chi-square statistical method. Findings revealed that undergraduate students of Godfrey Okoye University are highly aware of cyberbullying, with an average mean score of 3.21. The study further showed that offensive comments are the most common form of cyberbullying experienced by students, with a mean score of 2.77. It was also found that students perceive cyberbullying as a serious social problem with an average mean score of 2.98. Furthermore, the study revealed that depression and fear/anxiety are the major effects of cyberbullying, with mean scores of 2.93 and 2.63 respectively. Finally, the study found that blocking offenders is the most common coping strategy adopted by students, with a mean score of 2.96. The study was anchored on Choice Theory and Technological Determinism Theory, which explain individual behavior and the influence of technology on communication. Empirical findings were supported by previous studies which confirmed that cyberbullying remains a significant problem among university students. The study concluded that cyberbullying has significant impacts on students and recommended the establishment of anti-cyberbullying policies, awareness campaigns, and support systems to address the problem.
