Abstract

This study examined the moderating role of self-esteem in the relationship between materialism and Internet fraud tendency among undergraduates in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. A total of 156 undergraduates (69 males and 87 females) were selected through convenience sampling from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), and Coal City University (CCU). Data were collected using standardized instruments, including the 18-item Material Values Scale, a 10-item Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a 23-item Internet Fraud Tendency Scale. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Hayes PROCESS Macro were used for data analysis. The results showed a significant positive relationship between materialism and Internet fraud tendency (r = .214, p < .05) and between self-esteem and Internet fraud tendency (r = .532, p < .001). However, self-esteem did not significantly moderate the relationship between materialism and Internet fraud tendency (B = 0.04, t = 0.42, p > .05). The implication of the finding is that while materialism and self-esteem are associated with internet fraud tendency, self-esteem does not significantly influence the relationship between the two variables. Limitations of the study were acknowledged, and recommendations were made to guide future research in understanding factors that mitigate Internet fraud tendency among Undergraduates.
