Abstract

The study evaluated the Success without successor: evidence from Family business in Enugu State. The specific objectives of the study were to: examine the relationship between competence culture and survival of family owned business and determine the relationship between nurturing and mentoring on the survival of family owned business. The study used the descriptive survey design approach. The primary source of data was the administration of questionnaire. A total population of 310 business owners and employees was used. Two hundred and fifty two (252) returned the questionnaire and accurately filled. Data was presented and analyzed using Likert Scale and the hypotheses using Pearson correlation (r). The findings indicated that Competence culture had significant positive relationship with the survival of family owned business r (95, n=252), = .518 < .779, p<.05 and Nurturing and mentoring had significant positive relationship with the survival of family owned business in Enugu State, r (95, n=252), = .380 < .769, p<.05. The study concluded that competence culture and nurturing and mentoring had significant positive relationship with the survival of family. The study recommended among others that Parents are advised to look into the ability and capability of their children before handling over the family business to them. Not all family culture should be adopted in the business, for instance, the culture of primogeniture in which the first child inherits the parents property.
