Abstract
This paper examines the empirical effect of unemployment on economic growth in Nigeria using annual time-series data from 1991-2024. The study utilizes a quantitative research design and employs the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression technique, and the Granger Causality test. The long-run regression analysis indicates that the rate of unemployment has a significant negative effect on economic growth, with a percent change in the rate of unemployment causing a negative percent change in Real GDP by 0.31%. The Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) of -0.233 indicate moderate speed of adjustment at which about percent of the economy’s disequilibrium are being corrected each year. The Granger Causality result show no significant causal relationship between unemployment and growth in either directions. In view of the above results, we concluded that unemployment constitute the core structural challenge of sustainable growth and development in Nigeria. We recommended that Government of Nigeria needs to focus on diversifying the Nigerian economy in labour intensive sector of the economy like agro processing, light manufacturing etc. There should also be more investment on skill acquisition and technical vocation centre to make Nigerian youths relevant in modern economy
