Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of economic sanctions in promoting international peace and security, using Russia as a case study. It examines the sanctions imposed by Western countries following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The research adopts a qualitative approach, analyzing secondary data through the lens of international relations theories particularly Realism, Liberalism, and Constructivism. Findings reveal that while sanctions have weakened Russia’s economy and military capabilities, they have not succeeded in ending the conflict or compelling behavioral change. Moreover, the study highlights significant unintended consequences, including global inflation, food insecurity, and humanitarian crises in developing countries. The research concludes that sanctions alone are insufficient to achieve peace and must be integrated with broader diplomatic and humanitarian strategies. Recommendations include enhancing multilateral coordination and ensuring safeguards to mitigate harm to civilians and third-party nations.
