Abstract

The study critiqued the role that expenditure on social development played in labor force participation in Nigeria, using data between 1990 and 2023. It approximated the effect of government health spending and government education spending on labor force participation through a multiple regression model. The unit root test indicated non-stationarity of the variables at level, but a long-run equilibrium relationship was identified through a cointegration test. Therefore, the error correction mechanism was estimated using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method to capture short-run dynamics. The results showed that government education expenditure had a significant positive relationship, while government health expenditure also had a significant and positive effect on labor force participation in the short run. In support of expanding social spending to increase labor force participation, the study recommended increased investment in education and healthcare infrastructure, proper policy implementation, and strengthening service delivery frameworks to enhance the impact of social development on Nigeria’s labor market.
