Abstract

In this study, the "Determinants of Household Consumption Expenditure in Nigeria" are examined between 1980 and 2021. Its main goal is to identify the factors that influence household consumption spending in Nigeria. In particular, the goals seek to ascertain the effects of disposable income, interest rates, inflation, and gross fixed capital formation on household consumption expenditure. They also seek to assess the effects of each of these factors on household consumption expenditure. The study deployed secondary data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (2021) and the Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Nigeria (2021). The analysis of the study's data used an ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression model. Additionally, E-view 9.0 econometric software was employed while Ex-post research design was deployed. The investigation revealed a substantial and positive correlation between household consumption spending and per capita income in Nigeria. In Nigeria, the interest rate has a poor and negligible impact on household consumption. The association between inflation and household consumption spending in Nigeria is also positive but negligible. Finally, the link between household consumption spending and gross fixed capital creation in Nigeria is unfavourable and negligible. The researcher recommends that government increase the national income in light of the findings because of its direct impact on family income. The monetary authority should keep inflation under control and keep interest rates in the single digits. They should also lower lending and borrowing rates. Additionally, they should strengthen various economic sectors to help households build up savings for both consumption and investing.
