Abstract
This study investigated influence of social media use and resilience on mental health of university students. Two hundred and twenty-five (270) participants comprising; male (135) and female (135) undergraduates drawn from Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, participated in the study. Participant’s ages ranged from 16 years to 29 years (M = 23.12; SD = 2.34). Cluster and simple random sampling technique were used in drawing the participants for the study. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested. Three instruments were used in the study. They are; The 12-Item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) (Goldberg & Williams 1988), The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) (Smith, Dalen, Wiggins, Tooley, Christopher, & Bernard, 2008), and Social Media Affinity Scale (Gerlich, Browning, & Westermann 2010). Result showed that social significantly predicted mental health among undergraduates. Resilience negatively significantly predicted mental health among undergraduates. One practical implication of the study is that excessive use of social media by undergraduates negatively impact their mental health. Similarly, resilience serves as protective factors that enable undergraduates survive challenges of social media on mental health. Limitations were made and suggestions/recommendation stated for further studies
