Abstract
This study examined the effect of public debt on growth of the economy in Nigeria from 1990 till 2024. It has specifically calculated the impact of external debt, internal debt and servicing public debt on economic growth with the help of multiple regression model. The cointegration test revealed that the test on the unit root indicated that the variables were non-stationary on the unit, but established long run equilibrium relation between the variables. Therefore, using the OLS methodology during the short run, the external debt, domestic debt, public debt servicing have significant and positive relationship between economy growth and so the estimates suggest that they have a significant role in relation to each other. Therefore, the study had recommended that for a responsible and efficient borrowing strategy, it was important that there was a responsible borrowing, a borrowing done for productive investments, transparency and accountability of the borrowing process so that Nigeria's economy can grow faster and develop in future.
