Abstract

The study examined Political Clientelism and Electoral Development in Nigeria using Enugu State as a case study. The objectives were to determine if political clientelism has enhanced electoral development in Enugu State between 2015-2024; to ascertain if political clientelism has undermined free and fair election in Enugu State. Theory of institutionalism was adopted to justify the hypotheses which are: “Political clientelism has not enhanced electoral development in Enugu State between 2015-2024” and “Political clientelism has undermined free and fair election in Enugu State 2015-2024”. Documentary method of data collection was used to collect data from secondary source of data. Data analysis was based on content analysis. The study was able to establish that Nigerian politics more specifically in Enugu state has largely been influenced by clientelism which has undermined electoral development in the state. The researcher highlighted issues such as godfatherism and vote-buying as major obstacle to electoral development as they engender electoral malpractice in Enugu state. Amongst others the researcher recommends strict enforcement of the electoral act which adopts the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System to ensure transparency during elections.
