Abstract
This study investigated the Phytochemical Screening, Proximate Analysis, Mineral content evaluation of Avocado (Persea americana) seeds extract, with emphasis on qualitative phytochemical screening, proximate composition, and mineral content evaluation. Qualitative phytochemical screening revealed differential distribution of secondary metabolites across the two extract types: alkaloids, polyphenols, and terpenes/terpenoids were detected in both the aqueous and ethanolic extracts, while saponins were detected only in the aqueous extract and sterols and tannins were detected only in the ethanolic extract; flavonoids were absent from both extracts. Proximate analysis of the avocado seed powder indicated a moisture content of 10.00%, ash content of 10.80%, crude protein of 8.05 %, crude lipid of 5.00%, crude fibre of 3.00%, and carbohydrate content of 196.10%, highlighting the seed as a carbohydrate-rich matrix with moderate protein and lipid content. Mineral content determination by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS) revealed that calcium was the most abundant macromineral (701.44 mg/100 g), followed by potassium (20.64 mg/100 g), magnesium (8.16 mg/100 g), and sodium (9.06 mg/100 g). Among trace elements, iron was detected at a concentration of 0.95 mg/100 g and manganese at a concentration of 0.13 mg/100 g. Copper was detected at a concentration of 0.12 mg/100 g and zinc at a concentration of 0.20 mg/100 g. Potentially toxic heavy metals cadmium and lead were not detected above the limit of detection (< LOD), while nickel was detected at a concentration of 0.13 mg/100 g and chromium at a concentration of 0.67 mg/100 g. These findings collectively establish the chemical richness of ripe avocado seeds and provide a scientific basis for their potential nutritional and pharmacological exploitation.
