Abstract

This study examines co’r’ruption as a social pathology in F’rank Ogodo Ogbeche’s Ha’rvest of Co’r’ruption th’rough the lens of Ma’rxist lite’ra’ry theo’ry. The ‘resea’rch investigates how co’r’ruption functions as a systemic social p’roblem that unde’rmines political institutions, economic development, justice, and mo’ral values within society. The study is ancho’red on classical Ma’rxism and weste’rn Ma’rxism, which p’rovide a f’ramewo’rk fo’r analyzing the ‘relationship between class st’ruggle, economic exploitation, ideological cont’rol, and the pe’rpetuation of co’r’ruption. Using a qualitative ‘resea’rch design and textual analysis, the study explo’res the po’rt’rayal of co’r’ruption, abuse of powe’r, class inequality, exploitation, g’reed, and social injustice in the play. Findings ‘reveal that co’r’ruption in Ha’rvest of Co’r’ruption is not p’resented me’rely as an individual mo’ral failing but as an institutionalized p’ractice sustained by the ‘ruling elite fo’r pe’rsonal en’richment and the maintenance of powe’r. The study fu’rthe’r establishes that co’r’ruption cont’ributes to pove’rty, unemployment, social inequality, mo’ral decadence, and the ma’rginalization of vulne’rable g’roups, pa’rticula’rly women and unemployed youths. Th’rough cha’racte’rs such as Chief Haladu Ade-Amaka, Aloho, Ochuole, and othe’r public officials, Ogbeche exposes the dest’ructive consequences of co’r’rupt p’ractices on both individuals and society. The study also demonst’rates how the playw’right employs sati’re, i’rony, cha’racte’rization, and d’ramatic conflict to c’riticize social and political co’r’ruption while advocating accountability, justice, and ethical leade’rship. The ‘resea’rch concludes that co’r’ruption ope’rates as a social disease that weakens institutions, pe’rpetuates class opp’ression, and hinde’rs national development. It ‘recommends the st’rengthening of anti-co’r’ruption institutions, the p’romotion of t’ranspa’rency and accountability in gove’rnance, and the encou’ragement of mo’ral and civic education as essential measu’res fo’r combating co’r’ruption. Ultimately, the study affi’rms that lite’ratu’re se’rves as an effective medium fo’r exposing societal p’roblems and inspi’ring social t’ransfo’rmation.
