Abstract

This study examined the effect of strategic leadership on employee extra-role behaviour in Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu State. Specifically, the study investigated the effect of strategic orientation, strategic execution, strategic alignment, and strategic flexibility on employee extra-role behaviour. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised 420 academic staff of Godfrey Okoye University, while a sample size of 205 was derived using Taro Yamane’s formula. However, 205 questionnaires were administered, 181 were retrieved, and 171 valid copies were used for analysis. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis with the aid of SPSS Version 27. The study was anchored on Social Exchange Theory and Transformational Leadership Theory. Findings revealed that strategic orientation significantly affected employee extra-role behaviour (β = .341, t = 4.417, p < .05); strategic execution significantly influenced employee extra-role behaviour (β = .284, t = 3.926, p < .05); strategic alignment had a significant positive effect on employee extra-role behaviour (β = .253, t = 3.708, p < .05); while strategic flexibility significantly influenced employee extra-role behaviour (β = .301, t = 4.129, p < .05). The study concluded that strategic leadership enhances employees’ willingness to perform beyond formal job responsibilities. The study recommended that university management should strengthen strategic leadership practices to improve institutional effectiveness and employee commitment.
