Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the moderating effect of grit on the link between suicidal ideation and the prevalence of violence against women in Enugu State, Nigeria. It was conceptualized within resilience and psychological frameworks like the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide, and Stress-Diathesis Model. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design. The participants of the study were 49 women who had been victims of violence selected using a combination of purposive and snowball sampling method. Tools such as the Modified Scale for Suicidal Ideation (MSSI), the Severity of Violence Against Women Scale and the Grit Scale were used to collect data which were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Hayes PROCESS Macro for moderation analysis. Results from the analyses indicated that there was a significant positive correlation between suicidal ideation and the rate of violence against women in the study population (r = .494, p < .001). In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between grit and the rate of violence against women in the study sample (= -1.6714, p < .05). Finally, result of moderation analyses suggested that grit was a significant moderator of the relationship between suicidal ideation and violence against women (= .1101, SE = .0377, t = 3.0633, p < .01; R = .1289). This means that the strength of the association between suicidal ideation and violence against women is moderated by the level of grit. The study concluded that grit serves as a valuable psychological resource and has protective qualities that can buffer the negative impact of suicidal ideation on violence related problems in women. It was recommended that psychological interventions and other resilience enhancing programme which promote grit may have to be developed and applied in managing women who are exposed to violence. These findings broaden the current scope of literature on suicide by taking into consideration both risk and protective factors within the Nigerian socio-cultural settings.
