Abstract

This study focused on the influence of social media on the academic performance of secondary school students in English Language in Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State. Three research questions were posed to guide the study. This study anchored on Social learning theory by Bandura (1977). Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 5981. The sample size of the study was 200. This was drawn using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for the collection of data was structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using mean score and standard deviation. The findings revealed that there is high usage of social media among students. Specifically, this study shows that social media have influenced students academic performance negatively resulting to poor academic performance. Based on the finding of the study, the following recommendations were made: The benefits of social media can never be overemphasized; therefore, school management should ensure that they integrate the social media applications in library service delivery and learning system. Students should embrace the use of social media for academic purpose such as sharing of ideas, communication and searching for academic information. The library management should embrace the use of social media for current awareness services, selective dissemination of information and other services in the library.
